Today’s MUSING MONDAYS question asks…

Would you say that you read about the same amount now as when you were younger? More? Less? Why?

I would definately say I read more now than I ever did when I was young. Don't get me wrong...I read a lot as a kid...but, not nearly as much as I do now. One reason being, when I was younger, I had school, chores, and whatever else was going on. While I enjoyed it...there was always other things happening. But now that I am older, I find that I enjoy reading much more. It sooths me. it lets me escape and takes makes me forget for a time all of the realities surrounding me. What about you?

What’s the hardest/most challenging book you’ve ever read? Was it worth the effort? Did you read it by choice or was it an assignment/obligation?

My thoughts:
If I am being honest, I think the most challenging and most difficult read for me would be the bible. I know for some it is easy as can be....but for me...not so much. I don't like how it is written, I also don't like most of its content. I know that to many it might be sacred and absolute, but I found myself torn between wanting to argue the meaning of it all, trying to understand what was trying to be told...after all it is open to interpetation, or feeling guilty over the fact that I didn't agree or even like most of what was written. I didn't find it an enjoyable read....in fact...I never really finished it.

I also find it difficult to read self help books or how to do manuals...I get bored very easily with them. So it is a challenge to read through them.

My thoughts: I love both these series. I am very happy that I bought the Yasmine Galenorn books recently on Ebay so I can read a couple of the previous books I didn't get a chance to read before I bought this one. If you haven't read this series....your missing out. I look forward to this book because I am a Smokey fan.

I also enjoy the Chicagoland Vampire series by Chloe Neill. I confess, Chloe Neill keeps throwing me curveballs...I haven't a clue how the story will proceed. I do know how I would like the outcome to be....but, I just don't know if it will.....

As many of you know I have been trying to re-build my library from scratch. So, I have been shopping on eBay trying to replace what was taken from me and hope to save a little money doing it. I had spent sooo much money and time the first time around, I just don't have the stomach, wallet, or time to do it this second time around. Fortunately, I didn't have to do it all by myself. Because I had been working my ass off so much. I did some shopping on Ebay this last week or two. I managed to hit quite a few deals.

1. The Shifter Series by Rachel Vincent.
I originally had the whole series, but never got a chance to read them all. I am happy I found this series at such a great price. Now, I will have the opportunity.

2. Werewolf Series by Terry Spear
As many of you know...this is one of my favorite authors. The first time around, I had a difficult time getting some of her books...This time, I was fortunate enough to outbid others on Ebay for the whole set. YAY me.

3. The Jill Kismet Series by Lilith Saintcrow.
I didin't get the whole series, but a lot of the first 4 books. I am hoping I will be able to pick up Heaven's Spite before the next book Angel Town comes out. I have also been watching for a lot containing her Dante Valentine Series. I don't think a library should be without these urban fantasy novels.

As for receiving books for review....I haven't really been taking all that many. I need to get used to managing my time. I haven't had a job for years and years...and now all of a sudden I am working my ass off...It takes a little getting used to. I think once things settle down...I will have a handle on it.

My Review:
Noelle is used to being considered a rich blonde bimbo. In fact, many times she used the misconception to her advantage. The only person who was able to see through the facade was BFF Ava. They were pretty much the odd couple; one grew up stifled in the lap of luxury and the other roughing it on the streets. While many didn't understand thier connection, they were pretty much inseparable. In fact, Noelle's story couldn't be told without Ava. But then Ava got engaged to a vampire. Not only did Noelle have to deal with abandonment issues she had to deal with her feelings for Hector. The man who she loved but blew her off.

This book takes the reader back to the begin were Noelle and Ava joined AIR training camp. Ava wanted to become an AIR agent and Noelle joined with her to make sure that she became one. That is what BFFs do...or at least in their case it was. Noelle would do anything to keep her BFF happy even break a few camp rules.

Hector, smoldering hot and tough as hell agent was instantly attracted to the new trainee. But like most men, he made the wrong assumptions. It wasn't long before he saw through her facade. In fact, he admired her resourcefullness and resilience. He would have given anything to be with Noelle. But, he had a problem....every time he got emotionally worked up, his hands automatize causing destruction to anything he is touched.

I loved the chemistry between these two characters. Unfortunately, Noelle was doing most of the chasing. I found it to be a bit too much. I honestly couldn't help but think, "Come on Noelle! Enough is enough. Have some self respect." After all, it felt like the man kept leading her on....That being said, I couldn't help but feel bad for Hector. He wanted Noelle in a bad way...but he kept letting fear get in the way. *sighs men!*

The author stays consistent in her writing style, with wonderful world building, interesting plots, and engaging characters. Like all her books, the focus stays mainly on her characters. Although this book could be read as a stand alone, I would recommend reading the previous books in the series. You won't be disappointed. Dark Taste of Rapture is a light, fun, and sexy read. One taste and you will be wanting more.

3. Do you now have times when you read aloud or are read to?

My thoughts:
I used to love being read to as a child and when my children were younger, I enjoyed reading to them. But now, I don't like listening to others read. I can't stand when I goto the library to read and I hear someone reading aloud...even when it is a whisper. Drives me crazy. In fact, I don't like any noise when I am reading, unless it is to soft music.

As far as audio books go....when I was younger I listen to them. You know those audio read along books...but that was many many many years ago. In fact, I don't think I listened to an audio book in all of my adulthood.

My Review:
I absolutely fell in love with Enemy Lover, the first book in this series. This second book in the L.O.S.T. continues with Nikko taking up the lead along with lost love Selena.

Selena has always loved Nikko. She never wanted to make him believed that she aborted their child or make Nikko believe that he successfully murdered her. But the sacrifice was needed to save both their lives. Selena had a score to settle with daddy dearest. Her father, Paymon, prince of hell, was killing off those she loved trying to force her to rule by his side. Instead, she went rogue and became a daemon slayer. She'd been killing Hell's Gatekeepers and taking in their power in the hopes to kill her father so those she loved would remain safe. But things change when a mission goes wrong. Selena finds Nikko on death's door. In order to save his life, she injects him with a highly illegal and forbidden serum and then disappears.

For years, Nikko believed he killed the love of his life when he found out she aborted their child. Since then, he pretty much harden his heart and trained himself to be a killing machine as a member of L.O.S.T. , a cover ops team. Yet, when a mission goes wrong and he wakes up healed and super-charged. he can't control his emotions and seeks out Selena for answers. When it is discovered that they are supposedly working for the same cause, they grudgingly team up and work together. As they work towards completing the mission, things begin to unravel and truths are revealed and hearts are tested.

I appreciate that the characters are flawed. They don't have all the answers, they are not all tough as nails, and that they have layers to their characters. I confess, I didn't like either NIkko or Selena in the beginning. In truth, I thought the author was over indulgent with the stereotypical persona's. For example, I thought Selena was overly brash, ballsy, and bitchy, But as the story goes on, I learned that even though she was all those things, she was also vulnerable, passionate, and loving. But in order to discover those hidden qualities, you had to get to know her. Same with Nikko. I thought he was all brooding, fire and vinegar. Yet, when he discovered Selena was alive, his personality came alive. I enjoyed his struggle of emotions... Kill her, Screw her, Hate her, Love her, Screw Her and then Kill her....

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Once again, Karin Harlow does an amazing job creating a world that has a realistic and edgy urban feel to it. Enemy Mine is action packed excitement with second chances and romance goodness.

I didn't really care for this cover. The fangs look fake and the man looks to happy or content to be the angry Nikko.

So if there really is a book fairy out there, this is my wish for this week.

My thoughts:
I have a huge purse, just so I can always carry a paperback and my nook. I carry my nook everywhere I go. I have this worry that if I get stuck somewhere or end up having to wait for something or someone, at least I will have something to do. I always carry a paperback because if I am stuck in the middle of nowhere and my battery in my nook drains, I still have something to read. Yes, my name is Lori and I am a book-a-holic. I will say this....I am glad for this habit because if I had not always carried them with me, they would have been thrown away just like everything else I owned.

LOL...I don't hide my covers, but I think my husband wishes I would. He calls them "vampire sexy books"
I think he gets embarrassed by the intimate cover images...like nude bodies intertwined or the provocative titles, especially if we are in a room with other people or at least that is how it used to be. He also gets embarrassed when we are at a checkout line and the cashier is looking at the books I just purchased. Although, lately all my shopping has been online.

My Review:
Angela Giacomelli was a good, hardworking, and dedicated cop until she was brutally beaten and raped by a pimp, human trafficker of kids, and murderer. The law failed her, her partner and squad betrayed her, her boyfriend left her, and because of the rape, she couldn't have any children. It was too much. She took the law into her own hands and ended up getting a one way ticket to prison for murder. She was kidnapped in transport and recruited for L.O.S.T. a covert group. Her choices: work for them under the new identity, Jax Cassidy or go back to prison. *Think Le Femme Nikita*. I loved Jax. She was a survivor. She was strong, smart, and sassy. She had been through hell and back and she still remained resilient.Truth is, had I been in her situation, I am not sure I wouldn't have done the same thing.

Marcus Cross, was a honorable soldier when he was human. Since he was turned into a vampire by his sire, Lazarus, he had been working for a covert-op group known as The Solution. Marcus let his loyalty to his sire/commander without question rule him. He wanted to please his commander and thought he was fighting for the right side. But, in fact, Lazarus was only manipulating Marcus for his own nefarious reasons.

When Jax and Marcus meet, it began a battle of wit and will in a very sexy cat and mouse chase. They are instantly attracted and mentally matched. The chemistry is undeniable and their loyalties are tested. I loved the how they took as good as they gave.

The author does an amazing job creating a world that has a realistic and edgy urban feel to it. So much so, that as I read the words off the pages, I could picture the whole story playing out in my mind. I also loved the character depth. The author takes her time giving her protagonist a history, a reason. I really got to know and understand Jax and sympathized with Marcus.

Overall, I loved this book. Sexy, Suspenseful, and kick-ass, Enemy Lover is an addictive and adventurous read.

I am unsure how I feel about the cover. I think the man is sexy and shiny, but I am not sure how I feel about the bars and chains. I do like the layout and the font and text ...simple yet appealing.

My thoughts: This series is very addicting. It's fun, light hearted, and entertaining. I love the plots and the characters....pretty much everything about this series. I can't wait to read Gregori's story. He was alsways one of my favorite characters. Although, I do confess, this isn't my favorite cover.

Dear Netflix,

For years we have had a great relationship. You took care of my entertainment needs no matter what mood I was in and I paid you accordingly. However, lately, you seemed to not focus on my desires as much as you used to. Instead, you took a good thing and strained it with your 60% jacked up prices and in return you gave me so much less. Even then, I stayed loyal to you. But after receiving Mr. Hasting’s apology via email which can also be found [Here] I decided to break up with you. I have come to realize that you are mentally unstable and I want no part of it. I mean seriously, what did you think would happen? After everything we went through...you continue to make stupid changes to our relationship. I can't take it any more. I joined Netflix for fast service and convenience at a low monthly fee. Now you are splitting up that service, renaming it and wanting to bill me twice a month after taking so much from me already?...Where the hell is the convenience in that? My Review:
I originally requested this book from NetGalley because a friend brought it to my attention talking about how much she absolutely loved it. I mean with shape shifters, genetic manipulation, romance, etc...What could one ask for more...right? So naturally, I had to give it a try.

After I read it, I was torn in my opinion. For some reason, I just didn't connect with the characters. Don't get me wrong, the author does a good job of giving them substance and depth. In fact...mentally, I understood Lia's fear and her actions. I also could understand Tate's need to be protective, his confusion, and his determination to learn the truth. Mentally, I got it. Emotionally, I didn't. I don't know if it is because I am a heartless bitch or if Lia seemed to be submerged in so much fear that she was overly stubborn, naive, and stand off-ish or the fact that Tate was the existential alpha, you know same-o same-o alpha, that he just didn't do anything for me.

That being said, I did think the author had some very intriguing ideas as far as the plot was concerned. I loved the idea of taking real life controversies such as stalking, abuse, and genetic manipulation and embedding them into a coherent and plausible story. In my opinion this was the authors strongest attribute. It made me think of "What if?". What if I was being stalked by a villain such as Asher? What if the government actually did something like this with their genetic experiment?

Overall, I enjoyed the book. Granted at times it seemed to be long winded in the details and I couldn't connect with the characters emotionally. But the plot and the writing itself were done well. I am curious enough to want to read the first book in this series. But don't worry, this could be read as a stand alone.

I like this cover. I like that the wolf seems to have a watching feel to it...which makes sense considering the content of the story.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS question asks…

How often do you read a book, just because you’re in the mood to read it? (not because you’re obligated to for a book club, or a challenge, or for review)

I pretty much read everyday and always because I am in the mood for it. I often claim myself as a mood reader. It isn't a question of if I will read, it is more of a question, what will I read. There are several books that I will read no matter what mood I am in because they just plain rock.

When asked to review a book, I don't commit myself to it unless I am interested in reading it for myself. I always read for the enjoyment of it. I think that is why I pretty much stick with my prefer genres (Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Historical Romance). If I can't enjoy a book, what would be the point, right? So, if I am asked to review a book that I don't think would appeal to me, I generally decline. I don't think it would be fair to anyone, author or reader if I had to force myself to read and review a book. Now I confess, there has been occasional book that had soooo much hype, I would let curiosity get the best of me. But, that doesn't happen often. I think the last time that happened was The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Which I enjoyed regardless of all the negative hoopla it received.

Interview with a hunter angel - Einar from Her Warrior Angel

Thank you Lori for having me here again as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour, and in particular the Her Angel series section of it that celebrates the entire angel romance series and the release of the fourth book, Her Guardian Angel.

So far in this book tour I’ve spoken about the series, the locations, the books themselves, and have interviewed some of the heroes and heroines of the stories. Today I’ll be catching up with Einar, the hero of the third book in the series, Her Warrior Angel.

First, a little about myself. I write various paranormal romances as Felicity Heaton and my Vampires Realm series as F E Heaton. My paranormal romances are usually focused on vampires and werewolves, but I do also write demons and witches, and of course there’s my series about angels too. I’ve been writing original fiction since 2005, and have been an indie author since 2006, and in that time I have written and released over forty stories.

If you’re new to the Her Angel series and haven’t read any of the books, then you probably don’t know who Einar is. I’ll do my best to paint a picture of him in your head. Einar is six-feet-plus of masculine beauty and a powerhouse of toned muscles that can tempt any woman. He’s the epitome of a hunter angel, all tawny and rough, and gorgeous to boot. His mousy brown hair is just long enough to tie back, leaving tufts that curl out from behind his ears, and his rich brown eyes are flecked with gold. In keeping with the rest of his division of angels, he wears earthy brown armour that is edged and decorated with dull gold, and has hawk-like wings with feathers in hues of browns and greys. His relationship with his half-demon lover, Taylor, is forbidden, but she has his heart in a firm grasp and he’s fiercely protective of her.

FH: I have Einar here with me today to talk about his book, Her Warrior Angel. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?

EINAR: Hmm. Having been around countless angels after their rebirth, you would think I am used to speaking about myself. It does become tiring having to re-introduce yourself to angels who were once your friends but who have forgotten you due to death and rebirth. I’m getting quite old now, although not in appearance as we’re always reborn as we were. I’ve been around for two thousand years now and I’m part of the division of hunter angels. My favourite past times are hunting and killing demons who threaten mortals, although I do sometimes extend my hunts to demons who have been killing other demons too. Demon society is very complicated and Taylor, my beautiful lady, has an intense hatred of demons who target weaker demons or half-breeds. I love swords, battles and Taylor when she’s all jacked up after a fight.

FH: That was a little more than I needed to know. You met Taylor in your story, Her Warrior Angel. How did you meet and how did you feel about her initially?

EINAR: I was tracking some demons for Heaven and saw her walking through a park at night, alone. At the time I didn’t realise that she could handle herself. She was heading straight towards one of the demons I was after and I waited to see what would happen. I couldn’t attack the demon with her present, so I wanted to wait until she had safely exited the park. She attacked the demon... and she was breathtaking. Well, until she got herself cut by the demon’s claws and went down from the toxin. To this day, she still tries to pin the blame for that one on me. The moment I picked her up to take her back to my hotel so I could save her life by removing the toxin, I knew she was trouble.

FH: Your relationship with Taylor is beyond forbidden because she’s part demon. It must have been hard for you to go against your instincts and accept your feelings for her.

EINAR: Surprisingly, it wasn’t that difficult for me. I think it was more difficult for Taylor to accept the way she felt about me, and to accept that my feelings for her were real. I was a loyal servant of Heaven for two thousand years and had a hatred of demons bred into me, but when I set eyes on Taylor I knew she was different. She wasn’t like the demons I was used to and she proved that to me, and the more time we spent together, the more I realised she was putting on a show. Her sassy attitude had me fooled at first, but then I saw through it and saw that she was using it to cope with her attraction to me.

FH: Can you tell us about what happened in your story?

EINAR: I met and fell in love with a beautiful half-demon. (smiles) She can be a handful, but I still thank my stars that I met her and that I managed to get it into her thick skull that I didn’t care about where she had come from. It was what she did with her life and who she was inside that I fell for. I had worried at first that agreeing to hunt the demons with her help had been a mistake. It didn’t take me long to realise that she was invaluable and I couldn’t complete my mission without her. I just wish that it hadn’t dragged her into so much trouble and caused her so much pain.

FH: It all worked out in the end though. How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?

EINAR: Sweet. I live in London with Taylor now and we hunt together almost every night. Sometimes we don’t see eye to eye about the targets, but I trust her instincts and she has the inside information to back up her decisions. The locals still don’t trust me and I can’t walk into any of the demon clubs without her at my side unless I’m looking for a fight with half the bar. During quieter times, we tend to travel. Normally that means we end up shipping back a slew of new weapons to play with. At the moment, we’re trying to establish a good network of contacts across Europe so we can keep the demon problem under control. I’m trying to stay in touch with Marcus too. I’ve known him for two thousand years so I know what he’s like. If I don’t insist on staying in touch with him, he’ll think he’s doing everyone a favour and won’t contact us. He doesn’t want us involved but he seems to be forgetting that we already are.

FH: You’ve made an appearance in two stories other than your own. Do you think we’ll be seeing you again?

EINAR: I hope so. Some seriously heavy stuff is going down at the moment and regardless what Marcus thinks, we are all involved. If there is going to be another battle, I want to be there on the front line protecting what I care about and making sure my friends survive to fight another day. We all want that peaceful future that is just beyond the horizon.

FH: Well put. Marcus can be funny about letting others help but he’s only trying to keep you all safe. I’ll lighten the mood now and ask you a silly closing question. Describe yourself in one word?

EINAR: Dangerous. (grins)

FH: If you say so. I think that you’re really the brains of the group and not the most violent, although you do seem to like a little rough love. (smiles when he blushes) Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

EINAR: Only that I’m looking forward to your interview with Taylor, and I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series. Her Guardian Angel was “kick arse” as Taylor would say. You know it’s going to be just as crazy in the next one, and I want to be a part of it.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

As many of you know after "My Nightmare Incident" I have been trying to re-build my library from scratch. So, I have been shopping on eBay trying to replace what was taken from me and hope to save a little money doing it. I had spent sooo much money and time the first time around, I just don't have the stomach, wallet, or time to do it this second time around. Fortunately, I didn't have to do it all by myself. These last couple of weeks, I have been amazed how supportive and generous the book blogging community truly is, although I really shouldn't be surprised. I really do believe we have the best community online. *Hugs to Book Blogging Community*

I am glad I have the time this morning to sit down and actually post this all out. I have been working my ass off trying to earn extra money so I CAN buy books. I recently bought a Nalini Singh lot on Ebay. They were in very good shape for the price. I couldn't resist. Nalini Singh is another of my favorite authors. Unfortunately, this lot was missing a few books from the series. Thankfully, Kaleigha from Wicked Scribes who also shares a love for this author offered to help me out and get one step closer to having a complete set. She sent me three books via Book Depository.

I did some shopping on Ebay this last week or two. I managed to hit quite a few deals. Staggering really consider the amount of money I spent the first time around.

1. Breed Series by Lora Leigh.
Can you believe I bought this complete lot for only $88.98 + $15.00 Shipping fee. For those of you who have this series, YOU KNOW how much these books cost and how great of a deal I got. I spent at least $15 + for each of the Ellora Cave books not to mention the trade size anthologies the first time around. I truly believe I was meant to have these books.

2. Anita Blake Series by Laurel K Hamilton
Guess how much I got this whole series for. $85.00 + $17.00 shipping. Everyone of them in new condition, all hardcover. I even got a pile of Anita Blake Vampire Comic Books in pristine condition thrown in. I don't have to tell you how giddy I was.

3. Black Daggar Brotherhood by J. R Ward
Are you ready for this one? I spent $16.00 + $10.00 shipping fee for the complete set. I know right....just awesome and a little bit lucky.

Normally I wouldn't mention the amount I spent on books, but these really were a bargain and I felt like I should brag a little.

My Review:
When I go shopping for books, I tend to stick to certain sections, the Urban Fantasy, the Historical Romance, and the Paranormal Romance sections. I don't really bother with anything else. Occasionally, I will goto the Harlequin Nocturne section and pick up a book if I am in need of a fast light read. In truth, that is how I always thought of them pretty much fluff, a simple and quick read...You know read it once and be done with it. However, after reading Dark Sins and Desert Sands, I am going to have to reconsider my whole thought process and take them more seriously.

I got to tell you, I was absolutely surprised at the depth of the storyline, the character substance and the creative blend of mythology, romance, and urban fantasy. It is said, that big things can come in small packages, and I believe that this book to be just that. I couldn't put it down, I didn't want it to end.

I was captivated by Layla and Rays determination for truth. As Ray struggled with his obsession for revenge turning into passion toward Layla. I enjoyed watching Lalya's journey of self discovery and her need to do what is right. I also appreciated that the author made these two character work for their romance. It didn't come easy. They both had to re-learn the past, weave through obstacles in the present, and fight to have a future. I also thought the supporting characters were entertaining. I don't know how many times I giggled at Lalya's friend, Isabel. She definitely had personality. She was sophisticated and sultry with a hoochie mama mentality. She cracked me up. I was creeped out by the villain, Seth. He was truly evil, but for some twisted reasoning, he made evil seem sexy to me. How messed up is that?

Overall, the author not only did an amazing job with the world building, she took elements that normally wouldn't fit together and weaved them into a cohesive, fun, and fascinating story. Dark Sins and Desert Sands was filled with betrayals, conspiracies, obsession, romance, and revelations.

Stephanie Draven makes mythology contemporary in one word... SEXY.

Cover Art:
I think the cover is nice looking, but nothing extraordinary. In truth it looks like most other Nocturne covers. I do like the title and the font used for it though.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS question asks…

What is the one (or maybe two) qualities a book must have for you to pass it along to your best friend as a “must-read”?

Any book that makes me think and feel during and long after I have read it is a book I would consider a "must read".

World Building.
I find myself drawn to books that stretch my imagination with their world building and cause me to want and wonder what it would be like to live in such a world. Ever have a book that did that to you? A book that just made you think, "I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where things such as this existed?" Lora Leigh's Breed series, Nalini Singh's Psy-Changling series and both Laurell K. Hamilton series, (Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry series) are just a few series that have that kind of effect on me.

It isn't always Urban Fantasy books that do it to me. For example, Julie Garwood has a way of making me want to live in a time of Highlanders and Honor. Granted, I can't imagine how inconvenient it would be without toilet paper, toothpaste, and tampons, but life seemed to more honest and appreciated. You know?

Engaging Characters.
I also think that great characters and interaction is a quality that would cause me to want to pass along as a "must read". As you are reading this, I bet everyone of you have had at least a couple of characters that pop into your head, be it a character or character interaction. Something that stood out and was unforgettable. For example, off the top of my head, when I think of great characters and engaging dialogue, I think of the Kate Daniels series or the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Without engaging characters or great chemistry and dialogue between them, neither one of these series would have worked.

I personally feel that a book can have an amazing plot, but without engaging characters or creative world building, it's nothing but an idea.

As most of you know, I recently lost everything I owned to include these books [Read Here] and I am hoping and trying to rebuild my personal library. Among those thrown away were Kerrelyn Sparks's Love At Stake series and Lynsay Sands's Argeneau Family series. Fortunately, I was able to purchased both series on eBay. But, like many of the book lots sold, there are always a couple books missing, except for Sexiest Vampire Alive, that is a new release. The books listed above are all I need to complete both series.

My Review:
I think the blurb pretty much covers what the story is about. What it doesn't tell you is how interesting and engaging the characters were. For example, Alasdair, the hero of the story was an alpha male who wasn't your average stereotypical arrogant male, but an alpha male who wore his heart on his sleeve. He was a man who knew how he felt and wasn't afraid to express it....an idea I found refreshing. Unlike Gwyneth the heroine, who only thought she knew what she wanted. As a mother, I understood completely her need to protect and provide a positive future for her son. But, there were moments, I just wanted to slap her up side the head. Her need to be self sacrificing out of fear and sheer stubbornness annoyed the hell out of me and because of those qualities, she made some really dumb choices. As for the supporting characters , I thought they were engaging and well defined. Not only did it create a more interesting support system for the protagonist, but they provided a realistic quality to the plot as well.

Overall, I felt like I was reading a nice combination of Julie Garwood and Johanna Lindsey and although I have never heard of this author until now, I am already a fan. Vonda Sinclair did an amazing job writing an entertaining highland romance. It was fluid and wonderfully paced which allowed me as a reader to savour the character's emotions and events written within the pages. I look forward to the next installment in this highly anticipated series.

The heat to be gone. It has been too damn hot these last few months. So yeah, I am looking forward to the cooler weather. I also like when the leaves turn color...pretty! I also love the anticipation of the holidays, although this year will be a little hard. But, you just never know....it is the time of miracles and possibilities. As far as a certain book is concern....there are many I am looking forward to.

What’s your book with weather events? Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Blizzards? Real? Fiction? Doesn’t matter … weather comes up a lot in books, so there’s got to be a favorite somewhere, huh?

My thoughts:
I don't really have a favorite book that involves weather as part of the premise. As far as what I like to read while the weather is bad is a difficult question. Truth is, I am more of a mood reader. I read whatever I am in the mood to read at that time. If I am in the mood for a long read, I ususally pick up a series and read straight through. If I am in the mood for a emotional but quick read, I might pick up a nice stand alone...something along the lines of Julie Garwood or Terry Spear. In fact, now that I am thinking about it...One of my favorites books of all time, Destiny of the Wolf has a bit of a snow. I wonder if that would qualify. Another one I am not sure would qualify is the Kate Daniels series and the magic storms that happen in the series. Got to love those books. What about you?

I am happy to say I have all of them and patiently waiting for this one. This book features Lawe and Rachel’s sister, Diane. I think it will be a fun read especially after all the times Lawe made comments about the other breeds mating. LOL, he's scared shitless. Unfortunately, the release date has been pushed back *sobs* to December. I am also sad to say this isn't my favorite cover. I think the red is just too dark, you know?

The last book or should I say books I bought was Lora Liegh's Breeds and Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry complete series. They were first on my list to replace the ones stolen from me. Some were from new membership from a book club and most from a lot sale on ebay. LOL...

The last book I cried over were ALL the books in my library being thrown in the dump. But, I don't think that is what you mean...I would say the last book I cried over was one of the Running in Fear Novels by Trinity Blacio.

I am not sure I have read a book I haven't finished, if I had, I don't remember it. I do remember the last book I read that I thought sucked and that was Daughter of Darkness by V.C. Andrews.

The last book I read and loved would be reread of Dark Lover by J.R. Ward.

The last book I received for review was My Fierce Highlander by Vonda Sinclair, which I am currently reading.

The last book I gave someone else was my YA Books and they were given to my daughter only for those to be thrown in the dump too. *sighs* (Sorry, I am still coping)

The last book I stayed up too late reading was The Prize by Julie Garwood. Once I started reading her, I could't seem to put her down.

This week I managed to get a lot of Kerrelyn Sparks Love At Stake books. But, It is missing a couple #3 - Be Still My Vampire Heart, #9 - Eat Prey Love, and #10 - Vampire Mine (which pisses me off, because this was one of the last books I bought before my life went to hell. *sighs* Sorry, I am still coping....my bitchiness is often riding the surface when I even think about it all). Anyways... This is a fantastic series. If you haven't read it, you should ... you will love it.

My thoughts:
I absolutely love Julie Garwood books. As most of you know, I recently lost everything I owned to include these books [Read Here] and I am hoping and trying to rebuild my personal library. I don't think a library would be complete without them. These books are the type of books that any historical romance lover can enjoy over and over again. They pull at the strings of every emotion and make you ponder them after you long finished them. I would really love to get them back. So they are the first to go on my Wishlist, which I will be needing to redo *sighs*.

My Review:
What would you do if you received a letter from your deceased mother telling you, she wasn't your mother and the only reason she adopted you was so you could die on your 24th birthday and allow her child to live? What would you do knowing that knowledge and it was only 3 days to your 24th birthday?

Messed up, right? That is what happened to Katherine. Growing up believing she was unloved, jealous of the affection her brother received, and believing she was crazy because her mother insisted she remain medicated due to the "hallucinations" she always seemed to have. If that wasn't enough of a emotional roller coaster, two loves re-entered her life. Suddenly, Katherine's life was no longer as she knew it. She was pulled into a world of magic, mythical creatures, and deadly curses.

The author did an amazing job building up the plot. I thought it to be suspenseful and the pace to be fluid. However, I did feel that the ending was a bit cluttered and rushed. I would have preferred it to have been more prolonged, so that I might have had a chance to savour the intended effect. I would also have enjoyed more chemistry building and dialogue between the characters. While individually, they were engaging, I just didn't feel the emotional connection between each other. My favorite aspect of this story was the intrigue. I just knew something was going on, but I didn't know what. Each time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. It drove me crazy.

Overall, I enjoyed the world David H Burton created. His visual descriptions and the personalities of each character flowed off the pages and into my imagination. Broken was a page turner filled with surprising twist, hidden secrets and betrayals. With a mystery to solve, trust to be earned, and destiny to be revealed, Katherine discovered that she was stronger than even she knew.

Cover Art:
My first impression of the cover was, "Whoa that is a big in your face face." Don't get me wrong, I think the face is pretty, it's just very large and dominates the cover. My second thought was that woman doesn't look "Broken". After reading the book, I just don't feel that the cover reflects the story. The pendant, I get. The big head I don't.

My thoughts: I absolutely loved this series. I only got to read and review the first three before my books were stolen from me. *sighs* I am determined to get these books again and hopefully before this one comes out. If not, I will be waiting for a couple of Wednesdays. These are those type of books that you can read over and over and still enjoy them the way you did the first time.

Musing Monday Characters or Plot?

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS question asks…

Do you prefer character-driven stories, or plot-driven stories?

I think I prefer a little bit of both. I think both are needed to make me as a reader experience the full effect of a story. Without a good plot, being that it just too chaotic, predictable or boring, I might easily loose interest. Without interesting and compelling characters, I would find it hard to relate or engage with them. I appreciate when a story has characters that are difficult to forget. I also love when a series keeps those characters in play be it primary or secondary...I love to watch a character grow through the book, I think it makes the reading experience more appealing. What about you?

I know I have read some books that seemed to go on forever especially when I wanted them to end already...But to be honest, I am not sure what the longest book I have read is. I guess it would be Anne Rice's The Witching Hour or perhaps something from Terry Brooks. I could say Harry Potter's books...but I think that is more about large print than anything else. I just don't know.

I have known several people who have had to start over once in their lives. But, that was either a result of a personal choice or due to an accident or act of God. But, I have never meant anyone whose personal choices or everything they owned were taken away from them for no reason at all. Until me and my family.

It started late this last April. Yep about the time I stopped posting on this blog. Times were tough. My husband had recently changed jobs and the bills were starting to strain. An job opportunity opened up for me and I had to go out of town for a couple of weeks to get the training. It was a job that came with an apartment and all utilities paid. I jumped at the chance. After our yearly lease expired we were paying rent month to month and we were always on time or paid the late fee. The owners/landlords had many times tried to get us to buy their house, even offered to help finance....but, they were asking way too much. So we kept paying the rent monthly. A week before the 15th of the month, we called the landlord to let them know that we were out of town, but we would be back in time to pay the rent. Everything seemed to be fine. Truth was, we were going to pay the rent for the following month, but it was going to be our last. we just wanted to have time to pack what we wanted, have a yard sale for the stuff we didn't, and have time to clean the house so we could get all our deposits back. But, that wasn't to be the case. That weekend, our lives changed and not for the better.

My husband and I were going to meet our son at the house to figure out how we were going to get everything done. He got there first and called us, letting us know that the house was empty, the doors were nailed shut, and that there was a NO TRESPASS sign on the door. I don't even remember how I felt at that moment. Did I cry? Did I scream bloody murder? or was I stunned silent with confusion? I honestly don't remember.

What I do remember was my husband calling the landlord trying to find out what happen and where the hell our stuff was. I remember I was so distraught that I couldn't think straight. I also remember the landlord not answering his phone for what seemed like a 100 times. We left messages for several days. It had to be a mistake right? I mean we were never given a note, legal notice of any kind or any implication that they would pull something like this...nothing! I just didn't understand why this had happened. My husband finally got in touch with the wife. All she could do is cry and claim that there was a leak in the laundry room and that we destroyed her house. WHAT THE HELL?!?! All I could think about was how convenient that was. I mean we leave town and the house suddenly has a leak to give them entry ?!?!?! They had been after us for months to buy the house, they wanted to get rid of it...and they want to pull this shit? Alright I was mad. Needless to say it took a lawyer to find out where us stuff went....Are you ready for this? They claimed that they threw all our stuff in the dump. Yes, you read this right... THE DUMP! That nothing in the house was worth anything. I KNOW you have all seen pictures of my rented house and perhaps some of my furniture. I had an amazing Library and very nice furniture... Ashley Country cottage collection mind you. Yes, my book lovers...all those books in my personal library are gone, they were thrown away along with the shelves, and all our furniture and personal belongings like marriage and birth certificates, 20 plus years of pictures...medical records, tax records...my desk, computers, TVs, living room set, bedroom sets, clothes, dishes, etc.....yep everything. I was devastated, Heartbroken. It still makes me sick thinking about it.

For the last few months, I felt like I was mourning. I couldn't even look at my blog. What was the point of having a book blog when I had no books? Every time I tried I would cry. Perhaps it was selfish, after all we still have our health, right? But my library was something of a childhood dream come true. It took many years, a lot of hard earned money (my husbands mostly), and much love building it. ALL GONE! I cherished the books and manuscripts I got from the authors that were signed or the books I received for reviews. Not to mention all the books that had quoted this blogs' reviews in the front pages and were also signed by the author. I was really proud of those. I know that some people think it isn't a big deal, but for me it was a big deal.

Recently, my husband caught me looking at the pictures I had taken of my library...he told me to stop torturing myself. I could start over. In truth, I didn't know if I would have the heart to. But, after thinking about it, I didn't want my daughter to learn that when bad stuff happens, Quit. I want her to grow up strong and be able to take what ever is thrown at her, even when shitty people do shitty things. So that is why I am going to try my best to make a successful comeback. But I confess, I am still heavy hearted...that is the best way to describe how I feel.

In the meantime, we finally found a lawyer who is working for us pro-bono. Let me say, most lawyers are greedy bastards. Every single lawyer we went to told us we had a winnable case, basically it couldn't loose. That we were owed damages regardless if we did anything wrong or not. (Which we didn't!) But they wanted money we didn't have up front. First the landlords robbed us of our past, violated our present, and crippled our future. Now the lawyers wanted to take what we didn't have. So now we wait... and wait....and wait...I really do hate not knowing what the hell is going to happen. I find myself praying everyday to have justice served and restitution paid and those mean, callous, malicious people punished. EVERYDAY SINGLE DAY.

Fortunately, I am not too prideful to say we have been living on the charity of our friends. Everyone can't believed what has happened and are pissed as well. They have given us some of their old pots and pans, dishes, some pieces of furniture, clothes...necessities really. It was a reminder that although there are shitty people, there are people who are good and kind. HOPE. Thankfully, I got the job or we might have been homeless too. Perhaps one day, I will have the charity to forgive our previous landlords. But I don't think it will be today or anytime soon. But, perhaps one day.

*sighs deeply* So now you all know what happened and why I haven't been on lately. I am hoping to come out of my mourning period and once again make Escape Between The Pages once again active. I am hoping to remain positive and try to believe that when one door shuts..or in our case is nailed shut another door opens. I have missed you all terribly and look forward to talking to you again.

Callouses For Thousands of Years
There is a peice of dialogue in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series that always sticks in my mind when it comes to building a new urban fantasy series of my own. Harris' vampire Bill Compton rubs his chin, which is dark with a day's growth, and says that he was lucky that he had shaved just recently, when he was made a vampire. There were other vampires he knew destined to move through time with three or four day growths, or full beards.

And I always think about the movie Interview With The Vampire, when the disturbingly adult Kirsten Dunst chopped off her waist-length hair, only to have it reappear overnight.

This has always struck me as one of the more fascinating aspects of vampirism. Once one is made a vampire they're, well, stuck that way. They're a frozen version of their human selves, destined to pass through time (one can hardly call it "living") unchanging, except to repair whatever damage may happen to them from time to time as they move about the world, restoring them back to the exact copy they were when they were made.

If you extend that even further...what if you got made after you'd spent the day sweating heavily? A really bad hair day? Just before you were about to wash your hair? Just before you were about to do your roots? (Does dye even "take" on vampires? It does in the True Blood TV series world, but Harris implies her vampires can't even shave.)

But let's be nice and say you were made when you were looking your best, and so, phew, you get to pass through time looking pretty damn good. But uh-oh, fashions change. Now, the long ironed-out locks hanging dead straight, and the pretty bangs you have are looking passé. Not just out of date, but like the hair styles mothers used to wear back in the twenty-tens. If you want to look like the age you're supposed to be, you have to crop your hair around your ears and crimp it so it's fuzzy, and make it look white. How are you going to do that if it stays exactly the way it was when you were made?

Assuming you solve that conundrum and figure out a way to keep your hair short, what happens in thirty years time, when long hair is suddenly the fashion statement of the year again? Or very long fingernails?

It probably sounds funny, but depending on which fictional world you're reading, if the vampires are hidden from humans, then this sort of attention to detail becomes critical. If their physiologies never change, they have to find some way to compensate and appear to change as humans do. In the hands of a good author, details like this can add wonderful depth to a book.

Interestingly, in Laurell K. Hamilton's fictional world, vampires can grow their hair long (Jean Claude) and breed human children, which I always find faintly wrong. It doesn't toll loudly enough for me to not enjoy reading her books -- are you kidding? Jean Claude and Micah out-rank any small off notes. But vampires who can change their physiology in any way makes them less timeless and one step closer to human and mortal, to my mind. It does get around all the problems vampires would have with unchanging physiologies, however.

But Hamilton is a rare exception. Most vampires in most universes tend to be the immortal, unchanging variety. They have to deal with little problems like callouses that never go away, as my own 1,500 year old hero, Nial, did in Blood Knot. His callouses were on his hand, and came from the sword he once used, hundreds of years ago. But, as his physiology never changes, the callouses still remained for Winter to find, fourteen centuries later.

Then his gaze became unfocused. “Buonas noches,” he said into the phone, then began a rapid conversation in, as far as Winter could tell, flawless Spanish as he asked about flights to Australia.

Winter fought the need to shift in her chair, to hug herself, or in any way show how deeply Nathanial’s words had affected her. She turned her head to watch the spectacular sunset through the small window, instead.

Nathanial wasn’t anything like Sebastian had warned her he would be like. That was the problem. Oh, he was exactly like she had expected—controlling, a master at measuring and manipulating people—but at the same time not at all the Boris Karloff-style monster she had been braced to expect that she would one day meet.

“Winter.”

She turned her head to look at him. Nathanial was holding the phone out to her.

“What, you’re going to pass up the opportunity to get my attention with a heavy hand to my shoulder and then reach past me and brush my chest? I thought you were good, Nathanial?”

He gripped the corners of her chair and turned it so she was facing him square-on. “No heavy-handed tactics, remember?” His mesmerizing eyes drilled into her, as if he were trying pour the message into her brain via his gaze. “Besides, that’s clichéd and predictable. If I were going to attempt something so ham-fisted I would have pulled you into my chair twenty minutes ago and brought you to your first climax ten minutes ago, and had you begging for release again five minutes after that. All without removing a stitch of my own clothing.”

This time she couldn’t hide her indrawn breath. It shuddered as it went down.

Nathanial sat up, a tiny line between his brows. “Enough,” he said shortly. “You keep bringing me to these crude promises.” He held out the phone again. “There’s a United Emerites flight leaving at eleven. It stops at Hong Kong, then straight through to Perth, Western Australia.”

Winter scrambled to assimilate the dry, practical switch of topic. “I see,” she said. But her voice was thick with her arousal.

Nathanial’s eyes narrowed. “You liked that idea, didn’t you?”

She shook her head as she returned the phone to the wall mount. “The idea of being seduced by your professional array of strategies and schemes leaves me utterly cold, Nathanial.”

“But my offer of an honest seduction…?”

“Yes,” she breathed, as her body jumped and throbbed.

Nathanial’s position on the chair didn’t move, but she could feel his rising arousal, almost like an aura around him. It was in the tension that seemed to zap through him. The stillness that gripped him.

“Honesty between two thieves and expert liars,” he said very softly. “Do you think that’s possible?”

She slid forward to the edge of her seat. “Give me your hand and I’ll see if it is.”

For the tiniest fraction of a second, Nathanial hesitated. Then he lifted his hand out to her. He had a big hand, to match his height and frame. But unlike Sebastian, he did not have the long, sensitive fingers. His were strong, the palm square. There were calluses below the fingers. Winter touched them.

“From my sword,” Nathanial said.

“But…that must have been years ago.”

“Centuries, actually. Our physiologies do not change, Winter.” His gaze was steady, defying her to be appalled or horrified.

She covered his hand with both of hers and edged her senses inside him. It was the same deadness she remembered from her incursion inside Sebastian. But it wasn’t all black and dead and darkness. There was life of a sort. Just not life as she understood it. The heart was there, capable of beating. Blood, and veins and arteries. All the organs were where they should be. They were all dormant, ready to function as needed.

“Do you like football, Nathanial?”

“NFL? Bores me silly,” he told her. His body remained still. Silent.

“What do you like?”

“Sports are vague posturing of people who have forgotten why they do what they are doing. Did you know that most team sports were originally conducted to prepare men for war?” He shook his head. “I find them vapid and shallow.”

She smiled. “Well, I guess I asked for your true opinion.”

Nathanial smiled. “You did.”

“Very well. What do you like that isn’t sports? What gets you excited? Apart from sex?” she added hastily.

The gleam in his eyes told her the final proviso had been just in time. He considered for a moment. “There is no one thing that I consistently turn to. But there are many things that move me. I find them every day. You just have to be open to seeing them and they come to you.”

“I don’t understand,” Winter confessed.

“The modern philosophers and cultural psychologists of this day and age advise everyone that they should have a hobby that they’re passionate about, to give them an interest in life. That’s what you’re trying to ask me about now. Truth is, Winter, I ran out of time and patience for maintaining interests decades ago. Now, I just follow life. There’s always something new to learn and life always gives me something beautiful to appreciate. Something to get excited about.” He nodded towards the window. “Like your hair outlined by the sunset a moment ago. They were the perfect compliment.”

And she felt his heart shift just a little.

“Have you ever stopped to truly smell the bergamot in a pot of fresh Earl Grey tea, Winter?” he asked. “I’ve forgotten what it tastes like now, but the smell is divine.”

Blood stirred and flowed, pushed by his heart.

“I like studying the stars, because they’re older than me, and they make me feel very small, humble and insignificant. They haven’t changed in all the years I’ve looked up at them, despite the massive changes I’ve seen on Earth. I find that astonishing and comforting at the same time.”

Again, the small flutter of his heart beating.

“Every day there are small things. A kitten asleep in a plant pot. The sun rising over the snow and turning it pink. Hoar frosts still take my breath away with their beauty despite the hundreds I have seen. The kindness of the stranger who pays for the next person’s drinks at the coffee shop. The rudeness of tourists in Jasper during the summer season. The unconscious beauty of young people who don’t realize they have everything ahead of them and are enjoying their every moment now, just as they should.

“And then sometimes I am rewarded by meeting someone like you, Winter, who stirs me so strongly I am forced to hide my reactions with professional techniques.”

And his heart squeezed. Hard. It began to beat with a normal systolic pulse.

Nathanial sat with a perfectly expressionless face, though.

“Why?” she breathed.

“You already know part of that answer,” he said coolly, but his heart was telling her the coolness was a lie. “I have a weakness for redheads. Your fierce independence, your anger that masks the barely controlled passion calls to me like a siren’s song.”

And his heart leapt. She could feel all the physiological markers for a powerful arousal building in him, even though he didn’t move a single muscle.

“You are not what I expected, Winter Manon Kennedy,” Nathanial whispered.

If you’re a mood reader, what (genre) do your moods usually call you to read?

Can you imagine how many times, I wouldn't read a book because I simply was not in the mood for it? It wasn't because the book wasn't any good or that I was being lazy...although I confess, I have had a couple of those moments. No, it was because I just wasn't in the mood for it. Generally, I don't have a specific mood that effects what genre I read. I just love my Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and Historical Romances. Now, there have been times, I felt like cuddling up with a favorite book. It didn't matter that I had a pile of TBRs or other responsibilities waiting for me. I just wanted to read something familiar with no expectations. You know....hang out with an old friend?

The fact is, if I am not in the mood to read a book, then I won't. I don't think I would give a book the justice it deserved if I have to force myself to read it. So yeah...I am a mood reader and proud of it.

I bought some fantastic books this week. Everyone of them is one is written by my favorite authors. I do have some concern about Navarro's Promise. There is much talk in the blog verse about pages missing... Connor's Story...need I say more? I didn't think so. I love Larrisa Ione's writing, so naturally I would be excited about her new series. I loved Eternal Hunger by Laura Wright, so I am excited to read this next installment.

I got a lot of books this week for review. So many in fact, that I have closed my queue for the remainder of this month. With classes and what not, it is going to be difficult to get them out as soon as I want. *sighs* Truth is, I have read several of them already...it is the typing the reviews that is time consuming. I want to give a special "Thank You" to Heather Kuehl. I recently stumbled on to her series a couple weeks ago. I also put the above series in my wish list. I don't know if she saw it on my blog or if it was acoinwinky-dink, but the author contacted me and asked if I would like to review her books. I am very excited to read them.

My thoughts:
I recently stumbled across The Alexa O’Brien Huntress Series by Trina M. Lee and absolutely loved the premise. The blurbs give the impression that each book will be a roller coaster ride of emotions. Don't you love that? I also love the genre....Vampires and Werewolves...what's not to like?

I also selected Under Cover Of The Moon and The Gift, both books the first in thier series by Loribelle Hunt. I know that I can't always judge a book solely on cover and blurb.....but after having the pleasure of reading and reviewing my first book by this author, Kiss of Darkness , I can't help but think this author could potentially become an favorite. I loved her writing style, creativity, and the way her book effected my imagination, Not to mention it's one of my favorite genres.

My thoughts:
I display my books proudly. Ever since I was younger, I wanted to have my own personal library. For me, bookshelves filled with books makes a room have a more comfortable, homey, and personal feel to it. Besides, so much money had been spent on them, it would be a shame to just box them up or keep them hidden. So, I converted my dining room into a library. With my son moved out and my daughter always going off doing her own thing, it's just my husband and me. We pretty much just eat on TV trays in front of the TV in the living room. Truth is, the room gets more practical use as a library than it ever would have as a dining room.

Sadly, I haven't had the time to re-organize my shelves to put them up. So at the moment, they are sitting in piles on my most recent acquisition, another bookshelf.

Once I find time to re-organize my shelves, I will take new pics to update My Personal Library Page. I am proud of my library...So hell yeah, I want to show it off....wouldn't you?

Once again, I was surprised by the results of the poll. It was nice to see so many want to settle down. I was also glad to see so many ball busters and entrepreneurs. I confess, I thought for sure people would be as curious as I was about what is worn under a kilt. But, now that I am reflecting on it...if they married a highlander, they would eventually find out. Also, I was surprise to discover that no one would find religion or would get a job and stay invisible.

My thoughts: I love this series. I can't wait to find out what happens. While the anticpation is great....I am completely fustrated. I want Ethan and Merit to hook up.

My Review:
Violet Lynn Parker was a single mom of fraternal twins whose job at Calamity Jane Reality was in jeopardy. She had two months to sell a house or loose her job to a co-worker's nephew. So, you can imagine how excited she was when she got two new clients. A yummy, quirky, and mysterious Dane "Doc" Nyce who hired her to find him a house and Wolfgang Hessler, a handsome and successful jeweler who wanted Violet to sell his mother's house. Only both accounts were not easy jobs. Doc was picky when it came to the house he wanted. Apparently nothing smelled right with him. The house Wolfgang wanted to sell was in need of a lot of work, not to mention she had to follow Historical Society rules in any restoration it needed. If trying to keep her job wasn't difficult enough, trying to protect her children was more so. When Violet learned that three little girls had disappeared and that each girl resembled her daughter, she went into protective mode and began playing Nancy Drew to discover who the kidnapper was. As a mother myself, I found Violet to be very engaging. It was easy to relate to the frustration, concerns, and love she had for her children... and her job. Violet was a flawed character, she made mistakes, she didn't always have the answers, and at times she seemed to just go with the flow because there was nothing else she could do...and for that I felt she was believable.

I enjoyed watching Violet try to juggle her romantic life. In truth, I wasn't sure who I was voting for. Wolfgang or Doc Nyce. For the first half of the book, I was flipping back and forth between the two. But, after awhile, one seemed to become overly nice, you know always saying and doing the right thing? The other seemed to have more chemistry with Violet, even though he had a habit of sniffing houses and being evasive to any personal questions she would ask.

The author did a wonderful job defining each character, including the supporting characters. I loved how she captured the personalities and believable behaviors of the twins. Addy, Violet's daughter wanted to be a veterinarian and had of habit being the towns own personal animal rescuer and found herself in some unusual predicaments. When she wasn't rescuing animals, she was selling her belongings to put ads in the classifieds in the hope to find her mother a husband. Violet's son, Layne was more responsible of the twins. He had a tendency to dig up things and become excited about his discoveries. Perhaps he had a future as an archaeologist. I loved the relationship between Violet and her kids. I do wish I was able to get to know more about Aunt Zoe. While she was part of the family, there wasn't much interaction with her. I also enjoyed the interactions with the quirky town folk...there was Old Man Harvey. an grumpy but sweet old man, Mona her co-worker and friend, her best friend since childhood Natalie who had sworn off men for awhile. I also thought the author did a great job with co-worker and all around chauvinistic asshole, Ray.

Overall, living in a small town myself, I found the environment of this book familiar. I loved that the author captured the true essence of small town living and it's quirky people within the pages. The characters were well defined, credible, and easy to relate to. I thought the overall plot was simplistic in nature, provocative in intrigue, and written in style. Nearly Departed In Deadwood was a contemporary mystery romance with a touch of paranormal that kept me enthralled with goosebump-creepiness and belly aching laughter.

Cover Art:
I think the cover is creepy and mysterious. I would not want to live in that house. I also think it has a sense of humor added to it. Like the title D being slashed with an N. I also love when a series has a universal logo. It is a fun and thematic cover to look at.

When you were little did other children tease you about your reading habits?

No, not really. Truth is, when I was younger I had strict parents and a sheltered life. I didn't have many friends. The few I did have I only saw during school hours and an occasional function. So, when I escaped between the pages of a good book, I was usually in my bedroom. I know pretty sad huh?. No worries. I think it was then, I learned to appreciate the imagination and what a good book can do with it. Till this day, I enjoy the escape...hence the title of my blog, Escape Between The Pages.

My Review:
Kyana was half vampire half Lychen and the last of her kind. Her duel nature allowed her to be the best at her job, a tracer who sought out the Chosen. She also had a bad habit of leaping before she looked and running off with the mouth. Filled with anger and resentment, she didn't allow anyone to get close to her. Humans raped and tormented her, the Gods disdained and constantly belittled her, and her one true love rejected her. Hell, I couldn't blame her. I would be pissed at everyone too. I found it remarkable that she didn't hate or lash out, but embraced her duel nature and protected them. I truly loved the dynamics of this character. She made some mistakes, but she always seemed to have her heart in the right place. The fact that she was flawed only made me like her more. It was those imperfections that made her character credible. With the exception of Haven, witch, friend, and roommate and Geoffry, vampire, friend, and co-worker most people misunderstood her and made harsh assumptions and judgements about her. She would shrug it off. But the truth was, she was vulnerable and effected by what others thought of her, she just had years of practice hiding it behind her bravado.

Ryker was the son of Ares, god of war. A demi-god who often regretted his rejection of Kyana. But in his defense, he truly believed that her vampiric nature wouldn't let her lychen side be content with just one mate. Which was understandable. But, I think he should have discussed his concerns with her. Perhaps, he would have learned that his concerns were baseless. I also didn't care for the fact that he always assumed the worst of her. He was just as bad as his father in that respect. It wasn't until he stood back and actually watched her, her actions and interactions with others, that he began to truly see her. It was a pleasure to watch him finally come to the realization that he misjudged her. I am not sure how I felt about Ryker. I believed he loved Tyana, but I can't help but see a lot of his father in him.

I love that the co-authors gave depth and substance to the supporting characters as well. The story would not have had the same dynamic or had the same power without their presence. The love, loyalty, and support of Kyana's friends was an intricate part of her life, therefore an important element in the story. I also thought the gods were well written. I loved the confidence that Artemis had in Kyana. Unlike Ares, who had a bug up his ass. He loathed Kyana, although truthfully, I am not sure why. He came across as prejudice toward her race, but I can't help but wonder, if there was more to it. Did one of her kind reject him or do something awful to him?I hope to learn more in the following books. I was also impressed with the way the "Big Bad" was written. Chronos was intelligent, mythological, and diabolical. He was patient and let his minions to the dirty work while he planned.

I loved the plot of this book. It had a modern day Iiliad quality about it. Basically, the gods were growing week and loosing their powers. They each had selected a Chosen to take their place, but someone was killing them before they could take up the mantels. If that wasn't enough, an ancient artifact thought to be myth had resurfaced. A key that could open the gates to hell on earth. Kyana, Ryker, Haven, and Geoffry set out on a quest to save the world.

Overall, this was a great debut novel. The writing team Heather Waters and Laura Barone, under the pen name Sable Grace did a wonderful job blending Greek mythology, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance into a fluid and cohesive story. The world building was heavily descriptive and at times overwhelming, but the payoff was worth it. The authors built a solid foundation and strong future for the series. I thought the plot was intelligent and intriguing. The characters were richly developed and engaging. I especially loved the female protagonist, Kyana. She had a Xena meets Riley Jensen essence about her. The action scenes exciting, the romance was sensual, and the over all read delightful.

Cover Art:
I like the layout of the cover...although I confess, I think the authors' name is a bit on the large side and distracts from the title. It could have been smaller. I think it is always fun when a cover has a tagline. I like the background, the woman looks kick-ass, and the colors are easy on the eyes.

My thoughts:
I am so happy that the author decided to branch out making Hurst Amulet series a expansion of the original series, MacLean Curse. I love the way her writing makes me feel before with anticipation, the emotional roller-coaster during, and the satisfaction when closing the book. I love the covers of this series. I think the layout is thematic and the colors vibrant and appealing to the eyes.What about you? What do you think?

I love this author's Vampire Babylon series. The way she writes is fluid and enthralling. I love the concept of this trilogy and can't wait to see how she merges the different genres. I really like the covers to this series. Not only do they look thematic, they have a rustic, edgy, and barren feel to them. I love that the books come out back to back. What about you? My Review:
Tatyanna, a member of the Nocens clan was seeking out the human hunters who murdered her sire. They were hunting, capturing, or killing vampires and werewolves for study, gene manipulation, and experiments. Fortunately for her, she was able to loose them by escaping into the wilderness. Unfortunately, they managed to shoot her with two poison arrows before they lost her. She was lost in the trees and dying until she was rescued by someone she never would have expected. Tatyanna never thought she would be rescued by a werewolf or fall in love with one. I enjoyed Tatyanna's character. It was refreshing to have a female protagonist vulnerable and at times shy, yet still have a strong inner strength. I loved the passion she felt with her clans evolution and progressive beliefs. She was proud of her bloodline to not enslaving werewolves, try to find peace with them, and look toward modern technologies as steps in evolving. It was easy to like her.

Ever since the Tenebrae vampires had murdered his pack, Alpha wolf Nicolae had been living in the Canadian wilderness brooding over his failure to protect them. He lived in a modest cabin in the woods away from civilization. He spent most of his time running with the wild wolves rather than joining the local werewolf pack. In fact, he was running with them when he stumbled on to a group of hunters searching for something, a woman. It just so happened Nicolae found her first and saved her. I absolutely love Nicolae's character. While he was a lone wolf and no longer an alpha, I felt he still carried the essence of one. But, he was also a man tormented by his own failures. And even though he loathed her kind, he was also a man who helped Tatyanna because it was the right thing to do. Sure, he tried to blame it on needing information and he denied that he was attracted to her. But in truth, Nicolae was just a good guy, an honorable man. Personally, I think the world needs more like him.

The chemistry between Tatyanna and Nicolae was compelling and credible. Both characters suffered from their past failures and both were fighting their attractions for each other. I think what I liked most about thier relationship was not only the dynamic of thier characters, but the romance. The author teased with several fire flickering intimate moments that never quite burned and the anticipation of that first kiss or that first sensual bite was killing me. The author did an amazing job pulling me in and making me feel the emotional development of the characters every step of the way. I felt their emotions change from hatred to understanding and understanding to a sort of friendship. Soon after, I felt thier emotions continue to change into something stronger.... love. It was interesting to watch as each dealt with their feelings toward each other and the fear of thier feelings not being reciprocated.

Overall, this was the first book I read from this author and I must say I enjoyed it. I felt the author did a wonderful job with the characters in substance, depth, and personality. I also felt the author did a great job with the world building and plot. I loved the secluded environment that Nicolae lived in. But, I think I would be more like Tatyanna and want some of the more modern technologies available. While the plot was simplistic in nature, the story had a strong hold on my imagination. I found it to be not only compelling, but memorable. Hunter's Moon, a fast-paced and romantic read about healing hearts and forbidden love that will appeal to any paranormal romance reader..

What is not to like about this cover? I mean come on...sexy man back, bright full moon, pretty blue night sky, and dark mysterious tree line. This cover makes me want to howl.

""Since today is April Fool's Day in the USA, what is the best prank you have ever played on someone OR that someone has played on you?""

Growing up I didn't have many of the "what's in" clothes like most kids did in school. So when I filled out a information card for a chance to win a shopping spree at one of the "cool" clothes stores, I didn't hesitate. With each letter written, I prayed and hoped to win. Then about a week later, I get a phone call telling me that I had won. I was so fricken excited. They told me when to arrive and to be dressed up as there were going to be cameras for a photo. After making myself look my best and with so much excitement, my mother took me down to claim my prize. When I arrived to the store, I went to the counter to let them know I was there....and they looked at me like I was crazy. Turned out that I hadn't won and someone was playing a joke on me. I was soooo upset, I cried. I didn't understand what had happened or why.

The following day was April Fools. Do you know, not once did I think about the date? When I opened my school locker, there was my information card sitting on my books with the words April Fools and a smiley face drawn on it. To this day, I never discovered who did it or why.

My thoughts:
I am not sure what I have read that was considered odd. I like to read the back of movies. That isn't really odd, is it? Umm...I have read ingredients and warning labels on things like cleaning supplies and medicines. Again, not really odd. I have read profiles of a missing people on the back of milk cartons...but that was a long while ago and still not really odd. I also have read a cereal box or two in my time. I guess I would have to say, I have read some really strange and funny signs. While I don't remember what they all said, I found some online that were simular to what I am posting about.

With shows like CW's Vampire Diaries, HBO's True Blood, and Syfy's Being Human, Urban Fantasy has become all the rage. So, it was only a matter of time before someone brought in the wolves, werewolves that is. Lycans.

MTV has rebooted the 1985 Teen Wolf film, starring Michael J. Fox with a much edgier, darker and seductive version of the same name.

My thoughts:
I know trailers usually have a way of making a show look better than they sometimes are. But, I got to tell you , this one makes the new show look like it is gonna be so goooooood! Granted some of the effects looked a bit on the cheesy side, but not all of them...and the story has taken a much darker and interesting spin on the original one. I will defiantly be wanting to watch it when it premieres. MTV's Teen Wolf will howl its way to your TV sets on Sunday, June 5, right after the 2011 MTV Movie awards.

My Review:
I didn't find Elyn to be a believable character. I appreciated her fears after all the trauma she had to deal with being enslaved for 50 years and I understood her fear in running from Blade. But, I didn't feel that emotional connection with her that makes a charcter engaging. She felt like a cardboard version of what she could have been.

Blade seemed to have more depth, but in my opinion, he wasn't the brightest light bulb in the room. First, if anyone was to blame for his team and protectee dying, it was him. After all, he was getting laid while his team was dying. He knew that Elyn was a slave to Kruz. She didn't have much choice in what she did, he did. Second, he Knew Kruz was an evil son of a bitch... But, not once did he think about how Elyn might have suffered and what she had to endure during her enslavement. So when he thought it would be fun to play a little bondage with her, how did he think she would react?....What a dumbass! Fortunately, he realized his mistake and corrected it quickly.

Overall, I am a fan of Angela Knight's works. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of her best. I loved the science fiction and paranormal concept and I loved the world building. However, I felt that the author seemed to concentrate more on the world building and sex scenes than the plot and characters. I felt the characters were lacking in both depth and substance. I think had their been more dynamic to the characters and thier interaction, the outcome of this story would have been much more positive. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. It was a good quick read. It just wasn't a great one.

My Review:
The desperation of a mother, the fear of a child, and the compassion of a young Meg James was how the author chose to introduce this book. I thought it was a fantastic way to grab a reader's attention. It peaked my curiosity and fed my compulsion to continue reading on. It was enjoyable to watch how a single vow would change Meg's life.

Meg's character was very engaging. I loved that she pretty much danced to the beat of her own drum. She was loyal, protective of those she cared about, and very outspoken. She tried to keep a positive outlook on life even after her sister's death, her father having been forced to retire as Vicar, and the scandal that had surrounded her family had caused them to be shunned from polite society. Even with all the complications, the fact that Meg was raising and protecting a stranger's daughter, as a beloved part of her own family, only endeared me to her. I loved that she had a strong and spirited personality, which showed in her constant swearing and her defiant attitude toward those who would judge her.

Grayson Bellamont, a 400 year old vampire, returned home to discover his sister murdered and his niece missing. Believing that the James Family had been responsible, he searched for them with the intent to revenge his sister's death and reclaim his niece. But when he met Meg, his instincts told him she was innocent. Of course, it couldn't have been that he was attracted to her. Grayson was the stereotypical alpha male. He was full of sexy goodness and arrogant beliefs. So when I say, it was fun to watch him struggle with what he suspected, what he believed, and what he felt, I mean it.

I thought the chemistry between Meg and Grayson was just plain sexy. Not only did their bodies often betray their intentions, it was fun to read as they bantered back and forth matching each other in wit and sarcasm. I also appreciated the struggle Grayson had with telling Meg the truth of what he was...although it was fun when he realized Meg already suspected. I thought she handled it well. I loved how he suspected Hannah was Collette, but was afraid to ask...I found myself wondering, if he had just came out and asked, would Meg had told him the truth? Especially when someone Grayson knew and trusted was the very person who Meg was trying to protect Hannah from...

Overall, I think this type of writing is Lori Brighton's path to glory. I absolutely love how she took two of my favorite genres, historical romance and paranormal romance, and merged them into a cohesive and fluid story. The characters were not only engaging and memorable, but interesting. The plot was intriguing and compelling, and the writing was fluid and inviting. This was a great beginning in what looks to be a promising series. I can't wait to read the next book. Vampires. murder, betrayals, and love - A Night of Secrets is a guilty pleasure that not only entices the mind but warms the heart and feeds the imagination.

I absolutely love this cover. I love the different shades of reads and the thematic images. It has a very sensual feel to it. Not to mention, I always like when the cover has a tagline in the layout.

My thoughts:
This has become one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. It came out fast and furious and kicked ass every step of the way. I can't wait to see what happens with Gin and Owen, her sister Bria, and what the evil Mab has been up to.
