I recently told a friend of mine about Twilight being made into a graphic novel. Needless to say, it led into a huge topical discussion. There were some interesting and valid points made...and some not so much. We each had our personal opinions...
She claimed it was the authors selling out for the money...that it was nothing more than a gateway to having a movie made and thier wallets thickened. Which to be honest, alot of graphic novels do make it to the big screen and it does provide the opportunity to make some big bucks. I too think it is about the money...but I wouldn't go so far as calling it selling out.
I am not a fan of graphics novels myself. I only ever bought one graphic novel for myself. It was Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures, Vol. 1 by Laurell K. Hamilton. I didn't by it because it has Laurell K. Hamilton's name on it, or that it was a graphic novel. I bought it because it was suppose to have the origins of Anita and Edward working together. And while I appreciate the talent that went into the illustrations, I wasn't happy with the over all story of the book. I felt cheated. First off, graphic novels are not cheap. Second, it was vague and felt incomplete and didn't resonate in my imagination like the books did. I found myself was wishing, that there would have been more to the story, than what was given. It was nothing more than a summary...with no depth and little substance.
We both agreed that the books will always be better. Just like those books that are made into movie adaptions. But then, I brought up the fact, that we both purchased tickets or bought the DVDs to some of those adaptions. Of course, she then asked me, what the difference between me buying a movie adaption and a graphic novel? Yep...walked right into that one.
It was actually a good question and I don't really have an answer....I guess it just comes down to personal preference. In some ways, I feel like I would be cheating...like I would betraying my books...silly I know. Especially considering, I have no problem watching a movie adaption. I guess, I think that a movie at least has more detail and gives some character depth....graphic novels are just so 2 dimensional.....cardboard, you know? I don't know, perhaps you all could express your thoughts better on this topic, than I have.
A few popular authors who recently have had graphic novels out or coming out.
Mercy Thompson: Homecoming by Patricia Briggs
The Dark-Hunters, Vol. 1 (Dark-Hunter Manga) by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Dark Hunger (Carpathian) by Christine Feehan
Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures, Vol. 1 (v. 1) by Laurell K. Hamilton
Twilight: The Graphic Novel by Stephanie Meyer
How do you feel about books being made into graphic novels? Have you ever read one? Are you planning on purchasing one in the future?

I agree 100%, it's all about making $$$. I don't like them, much prefer to read a "real" book but if they reach a wider audience, I guess that's good too.
I love graphic novels, just as much as I love prose books. A well written GN has all of the emotional depth of a well written book. There are several series that I read and love, and I cry with every new volume. But they are like any other type of book - some are better than others, and some are a complete waste of time.
I have only read two graphic novels and really I would much prefer a regular old novel. I feel like the graphic novels miss out on some of the info that a book would give you. I highly doubt I will ever buy one. I just recently borrowed the Twilight one from the library and I am actually glad I did not purcahse it as it is not a book I would actually keep.
Great post by the way. :)
I prefer books being made into manga. The Twilight graphic novel was actually pretty interesting but yet a let down because I thought it was manga before I picked it up and paged through it. Like James Patterson's Maximum Ride series--they've been made into a manga series, and I totally love them. I'm almost afraid to see Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy become a graphic novel =/
I've never read or bought one but then again I've yet to see one available in English here. :-)
Even so, I think I'd only pick up an original work or an expansion of the story. For instance, I may enjoy the Dark-Hunter series but I'm not going to buy the books again simply because it is in graphic form. But I am interested in Stephen King's Dark Tower graphic novel series.
The Anita BLake graphic novel is the only one I ever read and I DNF. I hated the art work. Totally over the top with all those curls everywhere.
I am book lover. And I have read Twilight more than nth time. I can't imagine turning it to graphic novel. Expressions and feelings may not be able to justify through graphics.
